The six-car configuration describes the Akita design. Seven-car Yamagata sets and later conversions require separate specifications. The two supply voltages allow the train to cross between Shinkansen and converted conventional routes.

JR East identifies the leading and trailing cars as particularly exposed to lateral sway. Its E8 comparison describes active control at the E3 ends, then an expansion to every E8 car. This is a scoped Yamagata comparison, not every historical E3 variant.
Toyo’s history identifies the E3 PS206 as the first application of its low-noise Shinkansen single-arm design. It marks an engineering change in current collection, not just a different outline.
The guide identifies the PS206 single-arm pantograph with the E3. Its compact low-noise design is part of the explanation for fitting a high-speed train within the smaller conventional-line loading envelope. A roof view can reveal a distinction hidden in a nose photograph.
