The overhead supply is AC, but the original MT200 is a series-wound pulsating-current motor. Its 50% ripple specification describes the rectified supply reaching the motor; it is not a modern inverter-fed induction motor.
Look at both the seat back and the window in preserved car 21-86 in Nagoya. The transverse seats have reversible backs. One large side window spans two seat rows, so two window-seat passengers had different alignments with the glass.
