Why the body is so round
The compact rounded cross-section and long nose were developed together to control tunnel pressure waves while preserving cab and equipment space. The 5.6 t figure describes the structural shell, not a complete powered car.

On the eight-car Kodama, cars 4–6 have pairs on both sides of the aisle. These are ordinary-class cars. When boarding an end car, the Hakata end of car 1 and Shin-Osaka end of car 8 have no passenger door.
