A mountain-route design
The Hokuriku route combines steep gradients with power-frequency changes. Kawasaki treats traction, braking and dual-frequency equipment as linked route requirements.

E7 · original 2014 technical specification
The 2014 table distinguishes 260 km/h operation at introduction from 275 km/h vehicle performance. JR East now lists 275 km/h; permitted speed still depends on the route.

The Hokuriku route combines steep gradients with power-frequency changes. Kawasaki treats traction, braking and dual-frequency equipment as linked route requirements.
The original E7/W7 description gives 10M2T: ten powered intermediate cars and two unpowered driving cars. The guide lists forty 300 kW traction motors. That makes the individual motor rating and the complete train’s installed output two different numbers.
The builder gives row spacing of 1,040 mm in Ordinary, 1,160 mm in Green and 1,300 mm in GranClass for the original E7. These are distances between corresponding points on successive rows.
