Braking beyond wheel adhesion

Roof panels add aerodynamic drag, while an experimental linear device brings coils close to the rail to produce electromagnetic retardation. Both were investigated for faster emergency stopping.

Snow control through heat and airflow

Heated underfloor panels and reshaped areas around the bogies address snow adhesion and snow-laden airflow. These are experimental provisions described in the 2020 review.

Two ends, two experiments

Car 1 · Tokyo endApproximate nose length 16 m
Car 10 · Shin-Aomori endApproximate nose length 22 m

Original side-profile schematics. Both noses face left for comparison. The 16:22 length ratio is shared; curves and vertical proportions are simplified.

Car 1 keeps an E5-like amount of interior space. Car 10 has a much longer nose, a raised cab and a flatter upper nose profile. JR East compares the shapes to reduce the pressure wave produced when entering a tunnel.

Inside the train

On ALFA-X the windows are part of the experiment. JR East designed cars with different window sizes, including a windowless section, to study the car structure and cabin environment. Instruments travel throughout the formation.
