Can I tell T2 from T3 in black and white?

側窓(そくまど)

Look along the side. T2 inherited the wide windows of an earlier production batch of the 0 series; T3 inherited the smaller windows of a later batch. A close photograph of T3’s cab-side crew door can also show its set code. Ask for that view if the image only shows the round nose.

What the surviving car represents

T3 checked both electrical and track infrastructure while running. Its surviving end car represents that wider measurement system; the preservation notice is not a traction or sensor specification.

Inside the train

Why are there seats in an inspection train? Preserved T3 car 7 has a room where accompanying staff could sit, alongside an equipment room. Both spaces were opened to visitors at a June 2026 event in Hakusan.

Which yellow train am I looking at in Hakusan?

Read the car number: 922-26. This is car 7 of T3, a set built in 1979 to inspect the Tōkaidō and San’yō lines between Tokyo and Hakata. T3 finished inspection work in 2005 when T5 took over. Hakusan is its home in preservation.

Why is one car so short in photographs of T2?

Car 5 was a dedicated track-measuring vehicle, numbered 921-11. Its 17.5 m body rode on three bogies. The seven-car set could inspect the track and electrical systems together at 210 km/h. The car number beginning 921 is therefore quite consistent with a photograph labelled “922 type, set T2.”

Why do older photographs put the same car in Nagoya?

After storage at Hakata, JR West’s car 922-26 went on display at Nagoya’s SCMAGLEV and Railway Park in 2011. It subsequently made room for a cab car from the newer T4. Display of 922-26 began at Train Park Hakusan on 20 June 2025, in the ground-floor space beside the entrance.
