What separates an S set from an R set?

編成記号(へんせいきごう)

This feature separates the N700 from the rounded 800 when both are plausible. JR West’s closely related eight-car S sets are the 7000 subseries. A distant nose view cannot distinguish S from R reliably. Look for the set marking or vehicle number; without it, record only “eight-car N700”.

Look for a broad shoulder sweeping out from the base of the cab beside the flattened nose. The plate represents JR Kyushu’s eight-car R set.

Can I distinguish an N700 R set from an S set by its nose alone?

The flattened nose and broad shoulders help distinguish an N700 from an 800. JR Kyushu’s R sets and JR West’s S sets look similar from this angle. Look for the set marking or car number. If you can verify only the formation, record “eight-car N700”.

Powered noses need shielding

Powering both end cars adds a noise-control problem near ATC equipment. The design uses lower motor shields and protected wiring to limit direct interference.

Look for the compact lamps on the broad nose shoulders and the smaller, separated cab glazing. The drawing represents the R-series cab design; the photograph reference shows R2. The car numbers below identify R1’s two ends.

Seating

On the eight-car San’yō–Kyūshū N700, a typical ordinary reserved row has four seats. The non-reserved cabin in cars 1–3 has five across, so only the three-seat side has a middle seat. On Kodama, non-reserved cars 7 and 8 have two seats on either side of the aisle. Confirm the reservation designation for your departure.
